Things You'll Need:
- crochet instructions
- Yarn
- crochet hooks
-
Step 1
Crochet hooks come in many sizes. Choosing a hook that is right for the yarn and project has an important impact on the over all project. Check the instruction of the pattern for the size hook and yarn you should be using. Make a swatch and then adjust the hook size if need be in order to obtain the right gauge.
-
Step 2
The yarn should move smoothly over the hook. If it doesn’t move smoothly, adjust the tension. This is done by holding the yarn tighter for a tighter loop and loosening for an easier flow. This may take practice but eventually you’ll get it.
-
Step 3
When working with a pattern, read it first. Make sure you are familiar with all the stitches in the pattern. If the stitch is not familiar to you look up how to do them and try if a few times. When you get to that point in the pattern you won’t feel so lost. When working with a pattern or not, and there are a required count of stitches. Count them this will help keep your work on track and let you know if you’re dropping or adding stitches.
-
Step 4
Don’t pull on the project. Some yarns when pulled on will stay that way. Not pulling on the project will keep the edges where they are supposed to be. If for some reason your project is getting that pyramid shape, check the count of your stitches and the tension.
-
Step 5
Wash your project according to the care instructions that came with the yarn. It may even be a good idea to create a label with the care instructions for the project.
If you’ve checked all these things and can’t find your mistake don’t panic. You can do one of two things. You can fudge it or pull it out and start over again, but never give up.
