Step 1
Start your own garden together. Whether you grow them indoors or outdoors or start with a single pot versus a large plot of land, involve your child in growing fruits and vegetables with you. Your child will enjoy tasting the fruits and vegetables that grow and sprout from the plants that she has helped to plant.
-
Step 2
Let your child help you shop for fruits and vegetables. Get your child involved in finding, picking, and shopping for the fruits and vegetables in your household. You child will be more inclined to eat the foods that she finds for herself.
-
Step 3
Find books, songs, or television programs that discuss fruits and vegetables in a fun way. Then, plan on making a field trip to the local Farmers’ Market or grocery store. Children like to experience afterward the things that they have read about.
-
Step 4
Make a plate of different fruits and vegetables of various colors. In a fun way, suggest that your child eat the colors of the rainbow with you. You can even eat a “color of the day” together. For example, if the color of the day were red, then you will make a plate of cherry tomatoes, strawberries, apple slices, and red bell peppers.
-
Step 5
Don’t forget to share the experience with your child. When you eat, you are setting a dietary example for your child. What your child sees you eat on a daily basis is important in influencing your child to become interested in eating healthy foods.
