How to Become a Citizen of Canada

Becoming a citizen of any country or applying for dual citizenship can be an extensive process; however, look into becoming a Canadian citizen if you've lived there for three or more years. Becoming a citizen is important if you're planning to stay in the country for many more years so that you can have the opportunity to vote in elections in Canada and apply for certain government jobs. Even if you think you might leave the country in the future, you can still keep your citizenship status in Canada (see References).

  1. How to Become a Citizen of Canada

    • 1

Find out your eligibility to become a citizen. This includes being at least 18 years old, holding current permanent resident status, having lived in Canada for at least three years, being able to speak English or French and being capable of passing the citizenship test; you can review the rights of Canadian citizens by reading the free booklet "A Look at Canada."

    • 2

Check your eligibility quickly by using the Canadian Citizenship Free Assessment tool online (see Resources). If you pass the assessment, you will be told that you are eligible and that your next step is to apply for citizenship.

    • 3

Apply for citizenship by filling out the Application for Canadian Citizenship; you can print the application online or request that it be mailed to you. Click on the instruction, and fill out all of the required fields and other information that is pertinent to you.

    • 4

Attach photocopies of your birth certificate, marriage certificate, ID or any other required pictures to your application. Also, include the process fee for your application, and send the application to the nearest Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) office near you.

    • 5

Take the citizenship test at your nearest CIC office after sending in your application. You only are required to take this test if you are between 18 and 54 years old. After you are notified by mail that your application has be processed and accepted, you must attend a required citizenship ceremony.
