How to Remove a Stereo From a Mazda Metro

The Mazda 121 Metro was one of the first vehicles to use internal clips to lock the stereo in place as an anti-theft deterrent, so you're going to need the proper tools to release the clips and remove the stereo. Note that, depending on the year of the vehicle, the exact method of removal may vary.

Things You'll Need

  • DIN size release keys

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a set of DIN size release keys from an auto supply store. These "keys" look like metal rods bent into a "U" shape. There are two keys in one set, and you need both of these keys to remove the stereo.

    • 2

DIsconnect the negative cable from the 121 Metro's battery to shut off the power to the vehicle. This is a good precaution to take whenever you are performing any car maintenance, but it is especially needed here since you are working on something connected to the electrical system.

    • 3

Locate the holes for the stereo's release clips. There are four square-shaped holes on the stereo console, with two on each side near the edge. The two on the left side should be near the "Volume" and "Bass" buttons, and the two on the right should be near the "Channel Seek" buttons.

    • 4

Insert the release keys into the holes (one key into both holes on one side of the stereo each). Once the keys are inserted all the way, press outward on them as you pull the keys back toward you. This will release the clips for the stereo.

    • 5

Pull the stereo out of its seat in the instrument panel. Disconnect all the electrical connectors in the back of the stereo to remove it completely from the vehicle.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are replacing the stereo, make sure you have a unit that is made for your Mazda's year, make and model. The correct unit must not only fit within the instrument panel, but also work with all electrical connectors designed for the car stereo.

Just r&r the stereo in my 121 metro 1999 modle, the original head unit is quite easy to remove without any special tool. Open the glove box and you put your hand up near the head unit theres a clip that you can push in with your fingers. Push in & pull the unit out a little. Repeat on the drivers side then just slide it out easy. I also perchased a harness that plugs into the original loom (mazda ford) & joined the new stereo harness to it done
