10-inch Styrofoam disk
8-inch Styrofoam disk

2 12-inch (or slightly larger) flat Styrofoam rings
Red spray paint (must work on Styrofoam)
Hot glue sticks
Hot glue gun
12-inch- to-14-inch-long piece of red fabric
Old newspapers

Also known as an Energy Dome, the red Devo hat is fun to wear and easy to make. The Energy Dome is the perfect accessory to any new wave outfit and is a must for a Devo costume.
Step 1
Glue the two Styrofoam rings together so they are neatly stacked on top of each other. This is where your head will go, so make sure there aren't any strings of dried hot glue dangling.

Step 2
Cut the strip of red fabric so it will cover the interior of the rings and glue it on. Because the hat is made from Styrofoam, it will be mildly abrasive against your skin. The purpose of the fabric is to make it more comfortable to wear.
Step 3
Glue the 6-inch disk on top of the 8-inch disk. Make sure the smaller disk is centered correctly, or else your Devo hat will look crooked.
Step 4
Glue the two disks that you just glued together on top of the 10-inch disk. Once again, make sure that everything is centered so the final result will look even.
Step 5
Glue your stacked flat disks onto the top of the two rings you previously glued together. This is the basic structure of your Devo hat.
Step 6
Spread the old newspaper pages onto a flat surface where you'll be spray painting. Make sure you choose a clean and well-ventilated area.
Step 7
Paint your Devo hat with the red spray paint, making sure that all white spots are covered with paint. Let the hat sit for at least one hour so it will dry completely.
Tip
If you do not want to use Styrofoam, try to find thick paper craft rings and disks to use instead. This is more environmentally friendly, but you may not be able to find all of the sizes that you'll need for the project.
Warning
If you are not sure that your spray paint is Styrofoam friendly, spray it on a scrap piece of Styrofoam to see how it reacts. If the Styrofoam caves in and starts to melt, then you shouldn't use it on your hat, and you'll need to find another type of paint. It's best to read the details on the can to see if it works on Styrofoam. Ask a sales clerk for help if you need assistance finding the right paint.
