Place soap base into a broiler or crock pot and melt over indirect heat. If you're making soap from scratch, place water, lye and oils or fats into the broiler to make the soap base. Or choose a melt-and-pour base at your local health-food store or cooperative. Bases are made from a variety of different essential oils and fats.

Pour the mixture into soap molds. Let the mixture cool and fully harden before removing the soap. This may take up to 24 hours.

Remove the soap from the molds and cut as desired. If you've made a long block of soap, use a utility or kitchen knife to cut the soap into bar-sized pieces.

Tips & Warnings

  • As always, be careful when melting the soap base to avoid burns and high heat. Soap can be toxic to ingest, so keep soap-making materials out of the reach of small children.
