How to Make a Chunky Page

Chunky pages are a smaller, more embellished form of scrapbooking. The point of a chunky page is to make a book relating to some theme or another that is so thick that the pages don’t lay flat when you bind it. This is a fun, challenging project for both adults and kids alike.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cut a piece of cardstock into a 4 inch by 4 ½ inch square. That half inch is supposed to be left untouched/embellished on the left hand side for binding purposes. To make sure the page doesn’t get bent or ripped due to weight it’s generally a good idea to back up the cardboard with a thin piece of cardboard. Generally a cereal box or gummies box works, although you’ll want to cover the back of it with construction paper.

  2. Step 2

Pick a theme. This can be as broad as summer or as specific as a certain country. To make an entire book it is generally wise to make each page somewhat limited on the theme. For example, you could make an alphabet book and each page could represent a different letter of the alphabet or you could make a book of the different continents in the world, with each page representing a country within that continent.

  3. Step 3

Embellish like a madman! This can be done by embossing, using lifted foam squares, putting in brads, dangling ribbon and yarn of the right hand side, or gluing on beads; whatever you think will add depth to your page and still match your theme.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don’t put anything chunky on the back side of the page. When you bind the book together you’ll want the back of pages to be left plain so that the chunky side of the other page won’t knock anything off.
  • When binding make sure that it’s consistent on all your pages. Sometimes you might accidently cross that half inch mark and you’ll want to make sure you don’t try binding into something that’s supposed to be chunky.
