How to Build a Successful Single's Ministry

How to Build a Successful Single's Ministry thumbnail
Reach out to singles.

The key to building a successful community of single adults within your larger church population, is balance. If you can be inclusive of all types of singles, but also minister to the unique needs of widows, the divorced, the never-married, and single parents, you are well on your way. You also need to balance the social needs of single folks, and encourage legitimate friendships, without becoming a Christian dating service. This is admittedly a tall order, but here are a few things to keep in mind to keep your balance and succeed at this much-needed ministry.

Balance your activities. There should be singles-only retreats and workshops, but there should also be inclusion within the general church population. It's important to address issues unique for each segment of single adults, but find ways for members of your group to contribute to the church as a whole. This could be encouraging individuals to volunteer to teach, or sing, or it could involve the group contributing to a whole-church project, such as work days or fund raisers.

Balance the social times. Much focus, rightly, has been on supporting family units in the church world, with single adults often feeling marginalized. The need for fellowship and the opportunity to develop friendships and yes, romance, is vital, but - on the other hand - can't be allowed to take over the focus of your group. To keep your group from becoming an ingrown "match factory," focus on spiritual growth, personal healing, and service to others.

Balance the type of ministry. Don't be so heavenly minded you're no earthly good. Bible studies, and emotional healing are certainly necessary, but don't forget that many single's - widows, single parents - just need a helping hand. Get real, and reach out in a practical way to those who need it.

Balance your attitude. Remember being single is not a disease or a stigma, just an (often temporary) human state. Balance your compassion and desire to teach, heal and help with respect and the awareness of each person's worth in Christ.
