  1. How to Prevent Cancer with Diet and Nutrition

    • 1

Eat fruits. Fruits are high in anti-oxidants, which help repair tissue damage in the body. This tissue damage is linked with an increased risk of cancer. When you think anti-oxidants, think vibrant colors. Fruits such as blueberries, strawberries and citrus fruits are high in anti-oxidants.

    • 2

Eat vegetables. Like fruit, vegetables are rich in anti-oxidants, which can fight cancer. Beta-carotene is a good anti-oxidant, but excessive amounts--found in supplements--can increase cancer risk. Vegetables that are high in beta-carotene are the red and orange ones, such as sweet potatoes, carrots and squash. Similar to fruits, anti-oxidant-rich vegetables are those bright in color, including spinach and bell peppers.

    • 3

Eat fish. Fish is high in omega-3 fatty acid, which can suppress cancer formation or slow down cancer growth in animals. The best sources of fish omega-3 fatty acid are salmon, whitefish and shellfish. It's important to limit intake of high-mercury fish, such as tile fish, shark and tuna.

    • 4

Exercise. Diet and fitness go hand in hand when fighting disease. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce risk of breast and colon cancers if the activity results in weight loss. Obese people are at a much higher risk for cancer than non-obese people.

Tips & Warnings

  • Refrain from smoking or quit smoking, which increases your risk of lung cancer and other types of cancer.

  • A healthy diet and regular exercise program also will fight heart disease.

  • If you have a history of cancer or find lumps on your body, visit a doctor. Diet and exercise alone won't rid yourself of cancer.
