How to Fix an Oil Pan Leak

The oil pan in your vehicle holds the oil that circulates through your engine. Inside the oil pan is an oil pick-up that picks up the oil from the pan to move it through the engine. The entire pan is bolted to the bottom of the engine and sealed with a gasket. Over time, it's possible for this gasket to shrink or crack. This is especially true if you use engine oil additives or switch between synthetic and standard motor oil. When your pan begins to leak, the only real fix is to remove the oil pan and install a new gasket.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jack
  • Two Jack stands
  • Oil catch pan
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • New oil pan gasket
  • Razor blade
  • Brake parts cleaner
  • Fresh oil
  1. Step 1

Raise the vehicle onto jack stands. Jack up the front of the vehicle using the front jack point and place a jack stand under each front pinch weld. Then, lower the vehicle onto the stands.

  2. Step 2

Place an oil catch pan under the oil pan, and drain the oil pan. Remove the oil pan drain bolt on the bottom of the pan and allow the pan to drain. Once the pan is drained, replace the bolt and tighten it until any residual oil stops dripping.

  3. Step 3

Remove the bolts that attach the oil pan to the engine block, and pull the oil pan down.

  4. Step 4

Scrape off any residual oil and gasket material from the block-and-oil-pan mating surfaces. Make sure the mating surfaces have absolutely no gasket material left on them.

  5. Step 5

Spray the oil pan with brake parts cleaner. Brake parts cleaner is a powerful solvent that will clean pretty much any greasy or oily surface. While the oil pan is down, it's a good idea to clean the entire pan to remove any contaminates that may have built up over the years. Clean the mating surface of the pan especially well, and allow the pan to dry.

  6. Step 6

Align the gasket onto the mating surface of the oil pan. Press the pan to the engine block and hold it in place with a floor jack.

  7. Step 7

Thread the new screws to hold the oil pan to the engine block. Make sure that the gasket does not move and that you do not over-torque the oil pan bolts.

  8. Step 8

Remove the oil filler cap on the top of the engine, and pour in fresh oil.

Tips & Warnings
  • For specific information on your engine's oil capacity, changing the oil pan in your vehicle, and for oil pan bolt torque specifications, consult the particular vehicle's manual (see Resources).
