One of the first things you need to do when you arrive at a campsite where you plan to spend the night is set up your tent. If you have a pop-up tent, it should only take you about 10 minutes to construct it. These tents were made to be both easy to set up and easy to take down. They also have very few parts and stand up in a convenient dome shape.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pop-up tent with poles
  • Hammer
  • Stakes
  1. Step 1

Take your tent out of its bag and lay it out flat on the ground, door side up. Turn your tent so that its door is closest to the direction which you would like it to face. For example, don't put the door side right next to a tree.

  2. Step 2

Find the stakes, which are pieces of plastic or metal that are about 8 inches long. Look for loops on the edges of your tent. Stick a stake through each loop and hammer it into the ground as far as it will go without dislodging from the tent loop. Start with the four corners, then add additional stakes wherever there are loops.

  3. Step 3

Assemble the poles. Pop-up tent poles require little assembly. They are usually all one piece, just collapsed to better fit in the tent bag. Take out one pole and slide all of its sections into place. They will fit together, end to end. Do the same for the second pole.

  4. Step 4

Look for sleeves slightly wider than your poles on the body of your tent. They are usually at the four seams that divide the tent's walls. Slip one pole through the sleeve at front right, first, and then through the sleeve at back left. Do the opposite for the other pole. The poles will cross over each other at the center of the tent. They should bend into arch-like shapes.

  5. Step 5

Find the metal pin at each corner of the tent, about 5 inches long. Slide the closest pole end over each pin. Now you are ready to use your tent.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some pop-up tents truly pop up on their own. To set up these tents, all you need do is open the strap that's securing them closed and set them on the ground. They will take shape on their own. Just stake the tent down in the same fashion as in Step 2.
  • A pop-up tent is very lightweight. As such, it can blow away in high or even moderate wind. Do not forget to stake it down before constructing it.
