Making a Needlepoint Picture
-
1
Find a needlepoint picture to sew. Pictures can be found at craft stores such as Joanne, Michael's or even Wal-Mart. They can also be purchased online from companies such as littleshoppeofstitches.com. If making a custom design, consider using a printable transfer sheet and ironing the design onto the desired canvas.
-
2
Ensure all supplies are at hand when starting the project.
-
-
3
Purchase the colored threads that may be required if not included with the canvas. Thread colors are labeled with a numeric value. Typically the numbers will be the "DMC" color numbers. Thread can be purchased at any local craft store or online.
-
4
If creating a large design, consider obtaining a needlepoint stand to assist in holding the project in place while sewing.
-
5
Wash hands thoroughly whenever working on the picture to avoid transferring dirt and oils to the canvas.
-
6
Choose a place on the design and start sewing. Pay close attention to the different stitches the instructions may be asking for such as cross, back, and satin stitches.
-
7
Once the design is complete, use either a serge or sewing machine to close off the edges of the canvas. This prevents the canvas from raveling and ensures a clean edge for framing.
-
8
Take the finished project to a craft or frame store and select a frame and matte. Always check to see that the frame is the best fit for that particular picture.
-
9
Place the picture into the frame and either tack or staple it in place. Do not stretch the picture, but make sure it is tightly fitted. Place the matte into the frame, close the back and enjoy.
