How to Turn Off a Jeep Grand Cherokee Check Engine Light

Check engine lights tell you when there is a malfunction in your emissions system or engine.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a mid-sized SUV manufactured by Chrysler LLC. The Grand Cherokee has been sold in the United States since 1993. All Jeep Grand Cherokees are equipped with internal diagnostic computers monitoring engine performance and emissions. A malfunction within the system will illuminate a check engine light. The systems are quite sensitize; even a loose gas cap will cause a check engine light to illuminate. Luckily, turning getting the light to turn off is fairly easy.

• OBD-II Code Scanner

Instructions

1. Turn your ignition key to the "Acc" position to power your vehicle's computer and electronics. Do not crank the engine.

2. Connect the OBD-II code scanner to the diagnostic tool in your Jeep Grand Cherokee. Locate the Grand Cherokee's diagnostic connection by looking below the steering column, near the brake pedal.

3. Press the button on the scanner to check the system. The scan usually takes about 10 seconds.

4. Once the codes appear on the scanner, press the button again to clear the diagnostic codes stored in the computer.

Tips & Warnings

• You can buy a code scanner for as little as $60. If you do not have one or cannot acquire one, visit your local auto parts store. Most franchise stores, such as Autozone, offer a complementary diagnostic scan. They will also clear the codes to turn off the light for you.

• The check engine light will return in the near future if you do not fix the problem with your vehicle.
