How to Make Snowmen Out of Cotton Balls

Home-made Cotton Ball Snowman

Snowmen bring delight to people of all ages. Fortunately, making a snowman can be achieved without snow. Even better, making a snowman can be accomplished using the most basic household supplies and costs just pennies. By using simple products like cotton balls and glue, these cute little guys will be lined up on a ledge or mantle in no time.

Things You'll Need

• 3 cotton balls, any size
• Basic craft glue or hot glue gun
• Scraps of colored paper
• Scissors
• Paper hole punch
• Scraps of ribbon or fabric
• Buttons (optional)

Instructions

1. Make the base to stabilize the snowman's body. From card stock or heavy duty paper, cut a 2-inch circle of the color of your choice.

2. Glue the three cotton balls, one at a time, onto the base, and stacked on top of each other. Be careful not to press down too firmly when attaching the cotton balls to avoid smashing them. Using a hot glue gun, remove any strings left behind from the glue.

3. Punch out approximately 10 small black dots from black paper using a hole puncher, or cut them by hand.

4. Glue the dots onto the snowman, using a small drop of glue for each. Place them in the desired positions to create the eyes, mouth and buttons.

5. Cut out a triangle-shaped carrot nose with orange paper and glue onto the snowman's face.

6. Create the scarf. Cut a 12-inch piece of ribbon or fabric, no wider than 1/4- to 1/2-inch. Gently tie the ribbon or fabric around the snowman's neck, being careful not to smash the cotton balls. If necessary, manipulate the position of the scarf by tacking down loose ends with glue. If desired, trim the ends of the ribbon or fabric at an angle.

7. Make the hat. Cut out a 1 1/2-inch black circle. If desired, glue a small button on top of the color of your choice. Glue the hat onto the head, either straight on, or at an angle. Be careful not to press down too hard to avoid smashing the snowman.

Tips & Warnings

• Try using other craft items like sequins or beards to decorate the snowman. Using large buttons for the base of the hat will make the snowman top heavy and it may tend to fall over.

• Keep hot glue guns out of reach from small children.
