While removing wine stains from clothing, carpets, napkins and tablecloths might be difficult, it doesn't have to be impossible. Act quickly and follow these simple instructions to achieve success.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sponge
  • Warm water
  • Talcum powder, cornstarch or baking soda
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Dawn dish washing liquid
  1. Step 1

Immediately blot the area with a warm sponge or rag. Do not rub; rubbing will further embed the stain. Sprinkle talcum powder, corn starch or baking soda on the stain. The powder will help absorb the wine. Once it is dry shake off any excess powder or use a soft bristle brush to remove any remaining residue.

  2. Step 2

Mix equal amounts of hydrogen peroxide with Dawn dishwashing liquid if the stain persists. Apply the solution directly to the stain with either a spray bottle or sponge. (According to a study by a University of California high school intern, this was the best treatment for wine stains.) If you are removing a wine stain from an article of clothing, wash garment immediately after applying solution to ensure the hydrogen peroxide doesn't bleach your clothes.

  3. Step 3

Try a commercial product such as Shout, Wine Away, Dri-Clean or OxiClean to remove the stain if the above two treatments do not work.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not try to remove wine stains from a garment that is dry clean only. Take it to a professional to have the stain removed.
