How to Convert 3PG to AVI
3GP is a video format commonly used on cell phones. It is not easily played on computers and so it is better to convert it to the AVI video format. Doing the conversion will in no way harm the video or the computer, and can easily be done using the QuickTime Pro software program on a Mac or PC.

Converting the 3GP Video File to AVI

Run the QuickTime Pro program. Go to the top of the screen and click on the "File" menu and then on "Open File" from the drop down submenu. Navigate to the 3GP file and highlight it. Then click the "Open" button at the lower right corner of the window to load in the file and close the window.

Go to the top of the screen again and click on the "File" menu and then on "Export" from the drop down menu.

Give the file a name in the "Save As" space at the top of the window that has now appeared. Then go down to "Export" at the lower right of the window and click on the "Export" tab to make the drop down menu appear.

Select "3G to AVI" and release the menu. You will now see "Movie to AVI" in the "Export" tab. Go to "Use" at the lower left of the window and click on the "Use" tab to make the drop down menu appear. Select "Animation" from the drop down menu and release the menu.

Click the "Save" button at the lower right of the window to save the file as an AVI file and close the window.
Quit the QuickTime Pro program and delete or archive the original 3GP file.

Tips & Warnings
The quality of a 3GP file will depend upon the source that has shot it (i.e., the cell phone's camera). The conversion will enable it to be played on the larger computer screen, but might make it look pixellated or out of focus. Plan on tweaking the quality of the converted file in order to make it look better.
Always use a copy of the original file when doing a conversion to another format. This will protect the original file if there is a corruption or other problem that damages the file being converted.
