Things You'll Need:
- One new Outlet w/ ground
- Wire Strippers
- Long nose Pliers
- Screwdriver Flathead
- Phillips Screwdriver
-
Step 1
First, TURN OFF BREAKER TO ROOM,OR HOUSE MAIN.
Get all tools ,bring to the outlet site. Including NEW OUTLET.
The wire strippers are for cutting the cover off the wire. If you need more wire? They also can Curl the Wire into a HALF circle for attaching to screws. Sometimes you will need one screwdriver or another kind, Better to have both at your side incase. -
Step 2
Remove the cover from old outlet, lay aside.
Unscrew the outlet from the box two screws one at top and one at bottom.
Pull the outlet straight towards you, The wires should have some length.
it will be stiff so give it a little pull. Inspect the wires there should be no damage to them. If so Contact a Electrician. Pull them out towards you until you can comfortably work with them. Sometimes there is not much. So it could be a tight area to work in. -
Step 3
Now take the wires off the outlet.
Unscrew all the wires from it.
Separate them, Ground at Top, Black usually goes to the Left,
White to your right. It will make it easier to reinstall on the new one. Becarefull not to unscrew the screws all the way on new outlet. But they will need to be unscrewed some to get the wire under them.
Now hook the wires to the new outlet. Same places {the rear of the outlet} has the COLOR PLACEMENT IS ON THE BACK, to tell you where they go.
Look on the Back : Left one says Black . Right says White. Ground is on Top {usually a green screw} on the very Top. Make a HALF circle on end of wires to form a tight connection to the screws, Tighten the screws one by one on the wires to hold them in place. Push back in to the outlet box replace the screws that hold it in top and bottom. Replace the cover. NOW TURN ON ELECTRIC. Plug a lamp or night light in to test. I HOPE THIS BREAKS IT DOWN TO A SIMPLIER UNDERSTANDING.
I tried to stay away from the technical language.

on 9/13/2009 If you can not see the markings on the new receptacle - the screws on the side with the long slot are for the white wire. Be careful not to breakoff the little tab that joins the two screws together. 5* and R
