This article gives you tips and tricks on how to reduce your carbon footprint in the kitchen while at the same time saving money and eating healthy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find the perfect spot for your fridge
Make sure that your fridge is not standing right next to the oven or heater. The oven and heater radiate heat, which causes the fridge to use more energy to keep cool. Moving the fridge to a cooler place saves energy and money. And saving energy lowers your carbon footprint.

  2. Step 2

    Clear your fridge clutter
Take all items out of your fridge that do not have to be stored in it, for example, potatoes, bananas, unopened cans, sugar. If your fridge is too full, the air cannot circulate right, which causes the fridge to use more energy in order to keep cool. In addition, your fridge needs energy for every item it has to cool. So, become organized and go green at the same time.

  3. Step 3

Only open the door of the fridge briefly
It's an obvious and very simple step to reduce your carbon footprint. If you want to pour yourself a glass of milk, take the milk out of the fridge, close the door, pour the milk, and then open the door again briefly to put the milk back. Do not leave the door open while pouring the milk.

  4. Step 4

    Buy local produce
Fruits and vegetables that have to be transported around the world leave a big carbon footprint. Buying local produce that is just transported a few miles from the farm to the (super)market immensely lowers your carbon footprint.

  5. Step 5

    Go green by eating green
Producing vegetables and grain takes less energy than producing meat. If you go vegetarian once in a while, you can save money and energy at the same time. Try to have at least one vegetarian meal a week to go green.

  6. Step 6

You cannot do without meat? Eat chicken and pork instead of beef.
Chicken and pork can be produced with less energy than beef. So opt for the leaner and healthier chicken breast and reduce your carbon footprint while eating healthy.

  7. Step 7

Use energy efficient light bulbs and turn off the lights when you leave the kitchen.
