Things You'll Need:
- Delicate laundry detergent
- Flat surface for drying
- Towel
-
Step 1
Check the label before washing the item, as some chenille articles can only be dry-cleaned.
-
Step 2
Try to wash the chenille item by itself. If you wash it with other clothes, the clothes will likely stretch parts of the chenille or cause it to unravel.
-
Step 3
Set the washing machine on the delicate cycle and make sure it is using cold water. Setting the machine on a higher cycle will agitate the fabric and cause unnecessary wear and tear on the material. When you put the chenille in the machine, add a detergent specifically designed for delicate items.
-
Step 4
After it has been washed, do not put the chenille in the dryer, as the high heat will cause the chenille fabric to unravel. Place the towel over a flat surface where you can lay the chenille to dry. Do not stretch or yank the fabric when you lay it out on the towel, as this may cause the threads to unravel.
-
Step 5
Never hang chenille to dry. The strands of chenille are far weaker when they are wet, and hanging the chenille will cause the fabric to stretch out or tear.
-
Step 6
If the fabric is extremely delicate and you are wary of putting it in the washing machine, it is best to take it to the dry cleaners
