Step 1
Figure out your child's individual learning strengths and weaknesses. Some children are more visual learners and must see things to learn, while others lean towards audio learning where they thrive upon hearing information verbally. Determine your child's learning style and implement it when you help them with their after school homework assignments.
-
Step 2
When helping your child with homework, first take the time to thoroughly read and understand the assignment directions and materials. Understanding it first yourself will only make you a better teacher and helper. Take the time for a refresher and only advise them after you already can comprehend the material.
-
Step 3
When you are helping your child, do not give away free answers to them. Try to avoid spoon-feeding them the correct answers, but allow them to arrive at the correct outcomes themselves. If you must give the correct answer, elaborate and explain how you arrived at your answer. Always be patient with kids and take your time. Give them as much time and attention as they need.

Step 4
Finally, talk with your children's teachers to determine how you can help them with their homework. Teachers will be able to provide you with strategies that can be useful outside of the classroom.
