      Purchase an audio-based Vietnamese phrase course from a bookstore. With Vietnamese it is extremely important you have an audio portion, not just written, because Vietnamese is a tonal language. A tonal language means that one word can have several different meanings, depending on the tone in which you say it.

      Take one step at a time with the course. You will probably find, if you have ever studied other non tonal languages, that Vietnamese is quite difficult to pick up. Because of the increased difficulty, you may become frustrated at the speed in which you're learning. Don't allow this to bother you and take it slow. Go over each chapter until you have completely mastered it. Moving ahead prematurely will be quickly derail your learning.

      Make flashcards. Write the English version on one side of the card and the Vietnamese version on the other (course books will have the word spelled out phonetically). Practice these words thoroughly after every chapter. This will insure that you know all the words and phrases needed to progress further into the course.

      Pick up an on-the-go phrase lesson. These can be placed onto your iPod and you will be able to listen to it at your convenience.
