Determine your eligibility for certification. Before you can obtain certification, you will need to have been employed as a phlebotomist part time for a year or full time for six months. Take the exam to receive certification. The American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians offers a certification exam to eligible candidates. Within six to eight weeks of taking the exam, you will be notified of your results and sent certification documentation if you pass.
