Kickboxing has become a popular fitness program, and many gyms offer it as part of their instructor-led classes. Kickboxing combines aerobics with kicks and punches for a great cardio workout. Besides gyms, kickboxing instructors are employed by martial arts centers, corporate fitness programs and physical education departments. Proper certification will help you become a kickboxing instructor.

Things You'll Need:

  • CPR certificate
  • Group fitness certification
  • Kickboxing instructor certification
  1. Step 1

Get your adult CPR certificate. Most fitness programs require that instructors be certified in CPR. In some cases, you must also be certified in the use of an automated external defibrillator. Find classes in your area through the American Heart Association.

  2. Step 2

Develop a background in fitness. Consider earning a degree in physical education or becoming certified as a group fitness instructor. Many kickboxing teachers earn their group fitness instruction certification first. You can become certified through the American Council on Exercise.

  3. Step 3

Sign up for a kickboxing instruction course. The American Fitness Professionals & Associates (AFPA) has a distance-learning certification program for becoming a kickboxing instructor. The program will cover topics including self-defense moves, kickboxing terminology, training outlines, kickboxing equipment and circuit training.

  4. Step 4

Take the certification exam. The AFPA's kickboxing instructor certification exam covers the information you learned in your training. You need to get at least 90 percent of the exam questions correct to pass the test.

  5. Step 5

Apply to fitness facilities looking for kickboxing instructors. Check websites such as Ideed.com for job openings.
