Ink was said to have originated in China over five thousand years ago. It has served many uses throughout history, for writing, artwork, and tattooing. The colors were originally found in nature. Various flowers, minerals, and soot were used until synthetic colors were invented. Ink formulas have always been a guarded secret, thus the process of making writing ink and making tattoo ink differs greatly. Making primitive black tattoo ink in your own home is easier than you may think. By following the simple steps below you will be able to produce your own tattoo ink in less than an hour.

Position the sheet metal approximately 3/4" above your flame. The soot from the flame will collect on the metal as it burns. You'll have to adjust the wick on the lamp periodically. Allow the soot to collect for about 30 minutes.

Once you've put out the flame and the sheet metal has cooled, you can scrape the soot off into the bowl. Measure the amount of soot you've scrapped as you will need the exact measurement in the next steps.

Bring a cup of water to a boil either in the microwave or on the stove. Set aside.

Using equal parts of soot and alcohol, place each in the bowl to liquefy the soot. Blend well with an electric mixer, making sure all lumps are removed. Add equal parts of boiling water to your alcohol/soot mixture. Blend until you have an ink-like consistency. If you want it thinner add more water; thicker, you'll need more soot.

Place two ball bearings in a 1 ounce plastic bottle and fill with ink. Before each use, shake vigorously until you hear the bearings rattle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Alcohol evaporates if exposed to air long enough. Therefore, periodically, you can add a dab of alcohol to your ink to keep it consistent.
