Instructions

    • 1

If you're shopping for another child, ask Mom what kinds of things her little girl or boy loves most. Grab a shopping cart at your local dollar store and fill it with cute finds for girls such as a tiara, pink notepad, storybook, small plush animal or doll, cookies, socks, kiddie cologne, chalk and a bracelet. Boys love balls, swords, airplanes, small Matchbox-type cars, toy soldiers, bubbles and coloring books.

Measure out enough gift wrap to cover the sides, underside and interior of the cardboard box you've chosen for your project. Use glue or tape to tuck ends in so the box is completely covered. After the gift is unpacked, this covered cardboard box makes a great catchall, or it can be completely recycled.

Fill the gift box with craft shred. This colorful paper filler comes in every shade of the rainbow, but if you'd like to fill the box with your own shred (and save the money), use pinking shears and comics from the Sunday paper to make your own version. That stated, if you're putting a big plush puppy into the box, your gift will look authentic even if you use non-cartoon newspaper sections to create the paper fill.

    • 4

Arrange all of your presents atop the shred in an artful way. Put the big items in the back, prop plush animals and other "slouchy" items up against the bigger ones and secure anything that might spill (like fun shampoo or bubbles and a wand) deeply into the paper shred so it doesn't topple.

Finish off your masterpiece by wrapping it in cellophane. Choose either clear or color cellophane. Also choose the type you want to use. Some cellophane allows you to wrap the box and then gather the cellophane by hand and tie it with a ribbon. Or choose the type of cellophane wrap that you mold to the gift box using a hair dryer. If a little girl's costume collection is in your gift box, you may substitute nylon netting for cellophane. After the gift is opened, she can use it as a bridal veil. Or wrap a boy's box in a Superman cape instead of cellophane. Tie them up with ribbons and you'll be ready to present a one-of-a-kind gift to a one-of-a-kind child--all for a surprisingly small amount of money.
