How to Get Rid of Sinus Infections
Classic symptoms of a sinus infection or sinusitis include sinus pressure, headache, sore throat and post-nasal drip. According to Medline Plus Medical Encyclopedia, sinus infections are classified as either acute or chronic, and they can follow a cold or allergic reaction. But regardless of whether you encounter an occasional infection or deal with recurrent infections, there are ways to get rid of sinusitis and reduce symptoms.

Drink plenty of water. Nasal congestion is common with a sinus infection. Increase your fluid intake to thin mucus and promote drainage. Drink between six and eight glasses of water a day. Other options include decaffeinated teas and juice.

Use a heat humidifier to loosen mucus and ease congestion and sinus pressure. If a humidifier isn't available, sit in the bathroom with the shower running for 15 to 20 minutes.

Apply a warm compress. Place a wet cloth in the microwave for 30 seconds. Apply the warm cloth to your face throughout the day as needed to reduce sinus pressure, headaches and congestion.

Use OTC medications. Visit your local pharmacist and purchase a decongestant or nasal saline spray. Both medications promote sinus drainage, and are effective remedies for sinus congestion. Take as directed.

Keep your head elevated. Lying flat may worsen symptoms of a sinus infection. Keep your head elevated while sleeping by placing two or three pillows beneath you.

Fight the infection with antibiotics. Schedule a doctor's appointment and take antibiotics as directed by your physician.
