How to Be a Classy Lady

Contrary to popular belief, classy demeanor is not dead. Many classy women walk among us. They possess many admirable qualities similar to accomplished ladies of the past: an expansive education, love of culture, moderation of voice and manner coupled with an aura of gentility. Classy doesn't have to mean snobby, but it does mean distinguished, special and dignified.

Instructions

    • 1

Carry yourself with confidence, gratitude and contentment. Acceptance of self is the first step in conveying an open appreciation of life. Confidence without contentment can soon turn into angry discontent, which is unattractive. Grateful people pass their happiness onto others easily, increasing their charisma.

Dress with dignity and style. This means wearing well-made clothing that fits; to quote the Hairfinder website, "She shops for quality instead of quantity, this means cotton, silk and linen instead of polyester." Start with a proper-fitting bra, which can improve posture and carriage. Eschew clothing that clings, bunches or shifts; those garments make a woman look uncomfortable, which draws the wrong kind of attention. Read upscale fashion magazines like Vogue, W or Vanity Fair to get a reliable idea of what constitutes sensual, flattering style.

    • 3

Expand your mind through reading and stimulating, thoughtful discussion. Well-read people have stronger vocabulary skills than average folks, and can reason their points more coherently. Plus, the increased reading will give you conversation topics to which other high-class people can relate. Avoid most television in favor of programming that offers a learning or cultural experience. Entertainment should be uplifting and positive, not upsetting, hurtful or tacky.

Practice the art of modulated speaking. It's undignified to shout, guffaw or scream in public, so learn to avoid these habits. Free your voice of sharp highs and lows; instead, seek to keep a level volume for as long as possible. Make consonants crisp, which will eliminate some colloquial speech patterns. To improve vocal tone, smile when speaking. This brightens the voice and sets the tone in a natural place within the palate.

    • 5

Use your best manners at all times. There's never a good time to forget good etiquette. Show the most courteous behavior to everyone, even those who can't help you in any way, shape or form. Observe modest behavior when wearing skirts and dresses by crossing your legs at the thigh or ankles when sitting. If need be, purchase an etiquette guide by Miss Manners or Emily Post and a full table setting to practice eating and drinking properly.

    • 6

Surround yourself with other classy people, and minimize time spent with those who aren't. It'll soon become obvious that old friends may not be able to keep up, in some cases. Some people will admire the changes, but others may judge and dislike your growth. Gravitate toward people who accept and embrace elegant behavior to accelerate your own evolution.

Tips & Warnings

  • It may help to have classy role models. Some examples are Audrey Hepburn, Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway and Glenn Close. Clip pictures of these elegant women and hang them some place prominent in order to stay inspired.

  • Don't let your quest for class become a rut of snobbery and materialism. Classy women never think that they're better than others. Rather, class is the knowledge that you have high standards, but are still accepting of others living their own realities.
