How to Start a Modeling Portfolio

Decide on your portfolio image. The size of the book can change according to the regional market, says photographer Joel Edelman: "In New York, 9-by-12 and 11-by-14 books are popular and often required. In (other) metropolitan markets, 8-by-10 and 8.5-by-11 books are the norm and more than adequate." The book should be elegant and artistic; trends in New York include books made of metal, wood and leather. Prepare to spend a lot money on a book, potentially more than $100 for the folder alone.

Select several of your strongest pictures from past photo shoots. It's important to convey different moods and looks, because versatility is attractive to booking agents and clients. Quality is more important than quantity, so don't worry about having every page filled. Leave empty pages for future tear sheets and shoots.

Include a range of photos: black and white work, color photos and other color treatments. It's not necessary to have work from more than one photographer, but shots from more than one camera will increase your chances. Three good pictures from one photographer are better than 20 adequate shots from five photographers.

Include a short biography page listing your measurements and modeling experience. This page should look like a resume and suit the style of the book. Use creative fonts for titles, leaving the text plain and easy to read. Include contact information and website addresses in case you lose your portfolio.

5
Add to your portfolio regularly by attending open calls and networking events. There are always opportunities for models to pose and expand their books. Start with free jobs and work your way up to paid sessions. Obtain high-quality prints, adding the best recent shots to keep your book fresh.
