Bird's nest boutonniere

Bird's nest boutonnieres are a nice alternative to traditional flowers, especially if the groom is a lover of nature, the great outdoors or birds. They're classy, decorative and easy to preserve as a keepsake from the special day. Make your own bird's nest boutonniere to add a personal touch or incorporate your wedding colors. Add extra embellishments to the groom's boutonniere to have his stand out from the other men in the wedding party.

Instructions

  1. How to Make a Bird's Nest Boutonniere

    • 1

Secure the nest to the leaves using florist wire. Wrap the wire around the foliage a few times, then through the nest and around the foliage again. The wire should continue down the stem so they are the same length. Add hot glue between the nest and greenery for extra security.

    • 2

Tuck feathers through the nest in between the foliage and nest. Use the hot glue gun to secure the feathers in place.

    • 3

Wrap the entire length of the stem and florist's wire with florist's tape. Brown may work best as it will likely blend in with the color of the nest. The stem can be straight or curled like a tail depending on your preference.

    • 4

Arrange decorative eggs, faux jewels or buttons in the nest. Once you've placed them in a design that you're happy with, secure them in place with the hot glue gun.

    • 5

Wrap the stem with ribbon, if you desire. It can be tied or held in place with decorative corsage pins. Add a corsage pin in the middle of the back of the boutonniere to pin it in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase extra materials in case the first one doesn't turn out quite right. Give yourself plenty of time to play with the design to ensure the results you want.

  • Never let children use a hot glue gun, particularly unattended. Test the hot glue on your materials to prevent accidental burns.
