How to Make a Cover for a Boat
Boating is a great summer activity, but boats are not all fun and games. They are expensive purchases and require a significant amount of maintenance and repair. You can reduce maintenance work by making sure that the boat is always covered when not in use. Although you can purchase boat covers, making one is much cheaper and extremely easy.

1
Purchase a plastic, canvas or vinyl tarp that is large enough to cover the entire boat. Make sure the tarp is large enough to extend down the sides of the boat and not just cover the top. You also want a tarp that has grommets around the perimeter. Grommets are holes reinforced with metal rings.
-
2
Lay the tarp over the top of the boat with the edges hanging down over the sides. Arrange the tarp so there are no gaps at the top that could allow rainwater or debris to get into the boat.

3
Begin to secure the tarp by attaching one end of a bungee cord to one of the grommets in the tarp.
-
4
Stretch the bungee cord under the boat and attach the other end to one of the grommets on the opposite side of the tarp. You may need a helper to hold the tarp in place to avoid pulling it off as you stretch the cord.
-
5
Continue attaching bungee cords until the tarp is secure.

Tips & Warnings
If needed, you can punch additional holes in the tarp with a knife. If your bungee cords aren't long enough, double them up: Attach bungee cords to grommets on both sides of the tarp, then hook them together.
