Microchipping a pet is a perfect way to make sure that you can find your pet if it goes astray and is picked up.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • microchip
  1. Step 1

Visit your veterinarian, local animal shelter or pet store.Pet stores such as Petco and Petsmart also have microchipping clinics on site at their various stores. Local veterinarians and shelters conduct clinics also to have the microchips implanted in the pet.

  2. Step 2

The pet is bought into the clinic or store and a veterinarian or other qualified and trained staff person will use a special injection tool to insert the chip which is the size of a rice grain under the skin ,usually near the shoulders. The insertion is elatively as painless as getting a vaccination.

  3. Step 3

After your chip has been inserted make sure you get the information on the chip identification number and have the particulars and your contact information sent to the appropriate chip registration service. These include Home Again, AKC,Avid, and 24PetWatch. By doing this you will be able to protect you pet and have them able to tell who owns them and where they live.Ensure that this registration is done and filed, so when the pet srrives at an animal shelter or hospital ill or lost , you can be readily contacted. Services such as 24PetWatch.com have 24 hour Help numbers and computer integrated systems, such as Petpoint which integrate with the animal shelter software via the Internet in real time. Over 800 shelters in the US have this already.
