How to Make Foam Inserts for Toolbox Organize

If you have just bought a new set of tools or want to finally get your old collection organized, one way to do this is to make drawer liners for your toolbox from closed-cell foam. These inserts can provide a cushioned surface for your tools, keep noise down when removing and replacing tools from your toolbox, and indicate the obvious place to put the tool back after someone has borrowed it.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Closed cell foam in 1/8-inch and 3/8-inch thickness
• Sharpie-style fine-point marker
• Razor knife
• Contact cement

1. Measure the inside dimensions of the tool box drawer you are going to line and cut sheets of both the 1/8-inch and 3/8-inch foam to match these dimensions.

2. Set the tools that you wish to keep in the drawer on top of the sheet of 3/8-inch foam. Arrange them as you will want them in the tool box drawer. Trace around them with a marker so that their outline is on the foam. Remove the tools and use the razor knife to cut out the foam that is within these outlines.

3. Apply a thin layer of contact cement to the back of the 3/8-inch layer of foam. Align the two pieces of foam together so that all the edges are flush and press them together. The 1/8 inch foam will be the backing for the thicker foam and will sit against the bottom of the tool box drawer.

4. Set some heavy books on top of the foam and let the cement dry for about an hour. Now place the foam into the drawer and place the tools in their respective spots. Repeat the process for all your drawers and tools, and you are finished.
