How to Treat the Rash From Poison Oak, Poison Ivy or Poisonwood

Poison oak, poison ivy and poisonwood are North American plants that create a severe itchy rash. The effects of poison oak and poison ivy are similar to those of poisonwood. It causes blistering, inflammation, itching and colored bumps. The outbreak of itchiness, blistering and inflammation can last for days. If left untreated the rash can spread to other parts of your body and cause slight deformities and severe itching. By employing all the remedies below, you can effectively treat your skin rash.

Things You'll Need

• Benadryl tablets
• Oatmeal
• Caladryl lotion
• Dandelion flowers
• Aloe vera gel

Instructions

1. Take one tablet of Benadryl every four to six hours. This is an antihistamine, which blocks histamine actions in the body during an allergic response caused by poison ivy or poisonwood contact.

2. Apply Caladryl lotion. This over-the-counter skin anesthetic can be used to relieve itching, pain and discomfort from rashes caused by poisonwood, poison ivy and poison ivy. Apply the lotion at the first sign of discomfort, making sure to rub gently into the skin as directed. You can purchase Caladryl at your local drugstore.

3. Apply cooked oatmeal to the rash. Oatmeal contains plenty of antioxidants that can soften your skin and eliminate the dryness and itchiness associated with your rashes. Cook the oatmeal, making sure it thickens like paste, and let cool for an hour. Apply this mixture to the rash five times a day, especially at the first signs of irritation.

4. Apply dandelion mixture to the rash. The dandelion flower includes the potent compound taraxasterol, which enhances skin peeling and is effective in eliminating rashes. Add 2 cups of dandelion (do not utilize leaves, stems or roots) to 1 cup of boiling water. Stir until the solution turns pasty. Let stand for a few hours and apply directly onto the rash. Leave on the affected area for 30 minutes and wash off gently with mild soap. Do this once a day.

5. Apply aloe vera gel to the affected area. Aloe vera includes a potent substance called mucilaginous polysaccharide (MPS), which soothes and heals the itchiness and tiny wounds associated with poisonwood, poison oak and poison ivy rashes. Apply aloe vera gel liberally to the area and leave over night. Do this once every day especially before bedtime.
