How to Make Red Glittery Ruby Slippers

Although L. Frank Baum's original novel "The Wizard of Oz" dressed Dorothy in silver slippers, the sparkling red ruby shoes Dorothy wore in MGM's 1939 movie have become such a recognizable icon of the story that they are used even in newer film and theater adaptations. Whatever your reasons for needing your own pair of ruby slippers, making them is a quick and simple craft project.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase shoes. Go for shape, rather than color. Look for shoes with a round toe and a thick, raised heel. If the shoes have bows that's even better. This way, they'll match the style of the slippers from the MGM movie.

Paint the shoes with a base coat of red shoe paint. Though you will be covering the shoes as completely as possible with sequins or glitter, this coat will show through the cracks between the glittery part and ensure that the shoes still appear to be completely red.

    • 3

Spray the shoes with a layer of adhesive. Use a light spray, and keep the can at least six inches away from the shoes in order to keep the spray even.

    • 4

Apply red glitter or sequins. To get the most even coverage, take a pinch in your fingers and sprinkle it over the shoes from a few inches above. If you don't like the coverage you get, apply another coat of adhesive and another layer of sparkly red items.

    • 5

Give the shoes a coat of flexible sealant. This will keep the shoes from shedding glitter or sequins while you're wearing them.

    • 6

Add additional coats of sealant, if necessary. The longer you intend to wear these shoes, the more sealant you'll want to apply. If you only need them for Halloween or a few theatrical productions, you should be fine with one or two coats of sealant. However, if you want to use these shoes for daily wear or regular costume play, apply three or four coats.
