1
Find the right bowl. Large white ceramic bowls work better than glass bowls. The white color will make the colors of the fruit more noticeable. Metal bowls are also fine. Avoid using glass bowls because the ends of the fruit will be visible and spoil the effect.
-
2
Line the inside of the bowl with leaves. Thick leaves such as kale work well. Use leaves that have thick green ends. Cut away any brown spots.
-
-
3
Place several ounces of modeling clay or florist's foam on the bottom of the bowl on top of the leaves in the bowl. The leaves should stick out of the bowl while the clay or florist foam largely remains hidden from view.
-
4
Choose the fruit you want to work with. Look for pieces that are free from bruises. Fruit that will last awhile without immediately getting brown and mushy include grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, cherries, strawberries, pineapple and honeydew.
-
5
Cut up fruit. Start with pieces of cantaloupe and honeydew melons. Cut out five to 10 triangular pieces of melon. Place one end of a skewer into the center of each melon slice. Insert the other end of the skewer into the bowl at various intervals. The skewers should extend at least three to five inches from the end of the bowl.
-
6
Cut horizontal slices of pineapple and use a cookie cutter to cut out flower shapes from the slices. Place the slices at the end of a skewer so that a small amount of skewer shows through. Top the ends of the skewers with green grapes that have been cut in half. Vary the heights of the fruit. Make some skewers longer than others. Place them in the florist's foam or modeling clay.
-
7
String red grapes on the ends of a skewer so that the end is not visible. Insert the skewer into the modeling clay or florist's foam. Do the same for a series of strawberries. Insert the strawberries and grapes in between the other pieces of fruit.
-
8
Repeat as necessary in order to cover all empty spaces in the bowl.
