Purchase a 2.5" hard drive enclosure kit that houses the hard drive you remove from your computer. Select the correct kit according to the type of hard drive contained within your computer. Your hard drive consists of either an IDE drive or a SATA drive. Check your computer's manual for the correct specification, or, inspect the hard drive itself and look for the correct classification, which is prominently displayed on the outside.

Remove the hard drive from your computer after ensuring its power sources are disconnected. Using the proper sized screwdriver to remove the miniature screws attached to your hard drive, simply unscrew the hard drive from its enclosure inside your computer or laptop.

Insert your hard drive into the hard drive enclosure kit. Line up the ports correctly or else you risk damaging the kit and its connectors.

Close the kit and tighten with the screws provided.

Connect the USB cable provided into the accurate port on the hard drive enclosure. Insert the opposite end of the USB cable into an open port on your laptop or computer. Your computer reads the device and then your files are viewable under a "Removable Disk" drive.
