How to Take Truck Driver Training
Having a commercial driver's license (CDL) increases the number of job opportunities available to you in the transportation field since many companies require this type of license to operate their trucks. While a CDL is obtained from your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), you can prepare for the written and driving tests by taking truck driver training.

1
Find a truck driver training program. Chances are there are multiple facilities that offer truck driver training in your state, such as community colleges and trade schools. A company may even provide a training course if it is hiring a large number of drivers. You can find out what training opportunities are available in your area by contacting your state DMV.

2
Register and pay for the class. Typically, you must complete an enrollment form to take truck driver training. You also need to provide a copy of your current driver's license.

3
Complete the classroom portion of the training. Initial training is conducted in a classroom as you learn basic truck operation and mechanics as well as the laws of the road as they pertain to heavy trucks and equipment. This part of the class prepares you for the written exam you'll take with the DMV.
-
4
Take the written exam to get a learner's permit. To be able to practice driving a truck before you take the driving exam, you need to have a learner's CDL permit from the DMV. You can get this by visiting your local DMV office and taking the written exam after your first class.
-
5
Get experience driving. Some training locations schedule independent driving times with the instructor for each student while others have group driving times. You can find out which driving option applies to you when you enroll for the training.
-
6
Pass the driving exam and get your license. The driving portion is the final part of the training. Once completed, you can take your driving exam with the DMV and receive your CDL to drive trucks.

Know all of the dates and times for the class and make sure you can be there. Truck driver training is short; missing even a small portion of the class may require you to take it again.
