The Garmin eTrex Vista is a hand-held GPS device that provides easy-to-use GPS navigation. Whether you want to navigate to an address, point of interest or previously saved location, learning to use the eTrex Vista is simple and can be done in an afternoon.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take your Garmin eTrex Vista GPS device outside, away from mountains, tall buildings or heavy foliage. Hold the GPS receiver so it has an unobstructed view of the sky. Wait for the GPS device to acquire the necessary satellites. It may take a few minutes for your GPS receiver to acquire satellites for the first time. After that, your Garmin eTrex Vista will automatically acquire satellites at start-up.

  2. Step 2

Mark your current location as a Waypoint by pressing and holding the thumb stick until the "Mark Waypoint Page" is displayed. Your Waypoint will be automatically assigned a three-digit identifier. To change the name of your Waypoint, highlight the "Waypoint Name" field and use the keypad to enter a custom name for your Waypoint. Highlight "Okay" and press the thumb stick to save the Waypoint.

  3. Step 3

Find a Waypoint by selecting "Waypoint" from the "Find" list. From the "Find" list, select "By Name" and use the thumb stick to scroll through the list of saved Waypoints. Highlight your desired Waypoint and press in on the thumb stick to display information on the destination. Select the "Go To" option from the bottom of the information screen to begin navigating to the selected Waypoint.

  4. Step 4

Find a point of interest with your Garmin eTrex Vista by pressing "Find" to display the "Find" menu. Highlight "Points of Interest" and press the thumb stick to display the "Points of Interest Category" list. Select the desired category and press in on the thumb stick to see a list of point of interest subcategories. Select "Search by Name" from the "Options" menu at the top of the page and use the keypad to enter the name of your desired point of interest. Select "Go To" to begin navigating to your destination.

  5. Step 5

Use your Garmin eTrex Vista to find an address by pressing the "Find" button to display the "Find" menu. Highlight "Address" and press the thumb stick to display the "Find Address" page. Highlight the "Number", "Street" and "City" fields and use the on-screen keypad to enter the appropriate information. When the full address is displayed, select the "Go To" option at the bottom of the screen to begin navigating to the address.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add multiple stops to a route by entering the address as described in Step 5 and then choosing the "Add to Route" option from the "Find" menu.
  • Do not attempt to operate the Garmin eTrex Vista while driving. If you need to make changes to your route, pull over to the side of the road or ask a passenger to make the necessary changes for you.
