Step 1
Use the hard drive to back up your computer. Everyone knows it’s important to back up information, but what good is that knowledge if you don’t actually put it into practice! As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and a USB hard drive is a great method of prevention. Just plug it into your computer and back up your entire hard drive at once. If you’re really serious about protecting your data, you can get a drive that’s resistant to water and fire damage.

Step 2
Store project files on the drive. For example, many students use computer labs to work on projects in video editing, computer programming and computer animation. If you’re working on a project and you save it on one of the computers, you’re struck to that computer.
If you go to the lab and someone else is on your computer you’ll either have to wait or challenge them to rock/paper/scissors or pull out the rapiers and have a good old-fashioned duel in order to take over the computer. This can all be avoided by simple getting a USB hard drive and storing your project files on it. This way, you can hook the hard drive up to any computer in the lab and work on your project. -
Step 3
Share a USB drive among a group of coworkers. If you’re working on a group project, use a USB hard drive to consolidate all the relevant files and keep things organized. Everyone in the group can work on their own computers and then transfer files to the USB hard drive. This is much easier than sending files back and forth and constantly asking about the status of a project.
