Remove a Ferrari Gear Shift Knob

Stock Ferrari shift knobs are screwed onto the shift lever that protrudes from the metal shift gate, which is covered by a leather boot on luxury models like the 365 GTC/4 and 400i. Use the following procedure to remove a Ferrari shift knob.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver (early shift knobs)
  • 17 mm wrench (later shift knobs)

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the locking nut, which is located below the knob on the shift lever. This nut is tightened against the bottom of the shift knob to maintain the orientation of the shift pattern that is engraved on top of the knob. Early Ferraris have a smooth round nut with two notches cut in it for a screwdriver. To loosen this type of nut, insert the screwdriver into the slot and turn it counterclockwise. Later Ferraris have a 17 mm nut that is loosened with a wrench.

Once the nut is loosened, turn the shift knob counterclockwise and it should unscrew.

To install a stock shift knob, simply screw it on in a clockwise direction until it is tight and the engraved shift pattern is in the right orientation. Then either tighten the slotted nut with a screwdriver or a 17 mm wrench.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are a number of aftermarket shift knobs that can be used on Ferraris, such as MOMOs. These are usually screwed on like the stock knobs and use the same nut to control positioning. There are some, however, that use a set screw to hold the knob in the correct position. The set screw is turned with a small Allen wrench.
