Step 1
Trim the stems with scissors. The tallest flowers should be twice as high as the vase. If they are too tall, trim the stems until they are the right height. Cut the bottom of every stem off at a slight angle; this helps the flowers take in water.

Strip the stems. After you trim the stems, strip them of any leaves that will touch or be below the surface of the water; otherwise, the leaves will rot in the water. If you are using floral foam, you should still strip the stems, as this will allow for more flowers to fit into the vase.

Fill the vase with water or wet floral foam. Bring the level of the water to about two-thirds of the vase. Add powdered flower food to the water.

Insert the tallest flowers first. They should be in the center of the arrangement. Then, add smaller flowers around the edges. Crossing the stems will give the flowers a steadier base. Use whatever flowers and colors you like. Single-color arrangements, such as an arrangement of all-white roses, tend to have a more sophisticated look than multi-colored arrangements.

Fill in the gaps with greenery. This greenery can be fern leaves, other leaves or even trailing vines. It can also include items such as baby's breath or other tiny flowers.
