A balloon-powered, balsa-wood car is a simple crafting project which can be completed without any special wood-working or crafting skills. Created entirely from cheap items, and held together using glue and tape, this car can be created quickly and provide plenty of fun as it rushes around a room.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Balsa wood sheet
  • Two drinking straws
  • 4 plastic bottle caps
  • Kebab skewer (smaller diameter than straws)
  • Masking tape
  • Hot glue gun
  • Balloon
  1. Step 1

Cut one straw into two portions, 2 inches long each, and the skewers into one 6-inch portion each, and discard the remainder.

  2. Step 2

Cut a piece of balsa wood, 4 inches by 6 inches.

  3. Step 3

Glue the two cut pieces of drinking straw to the top of the balsa wood, about 1/2-inch in from each 4-inch side of the wood, running parallel to the 4-inch side.

  4. Step 4

Glue a bottle cap to one end of each skewer, positioning the skewer so that it is in the center of the cap, so that it will rotate evenly.

  5. Step 5

Apply a ring of hot glue around the straws about 1/2-inch in from the bottle cap. Each ring is applied individually. Do not glue the straws together.

  6. Step 6

Pass the skewers through the straw portions, and repeat Steps 4 and 5 with the remaining bottle caps so that all four wheels are attached.

  7. Step 7

Insert the uncut drinking straw into the balloon and secure it by wrapping around the neck of the balloon tightly with masking tape.

  8. Step 8

Tape the balloon to the top of the sheet of balsa wood, with the straw facing off one of the 4-inch sides.

  9. Step 9

Blow into the straw to inflate the balloon, and release to let the car go. It will drive in the direction opposite the direction the straw is pointing.
