Paper lanterns give a warm glowing light that makes any occasion extra special. They are hung outside of businesses in China to attract the masses. In New Mexico and Arizona, luminaries are displayed in elaborate designs to celebrate Christmas Eve. It is believed by Christians that putting luminaries along the path will help guide the spirit of Christ to one's home.

Paper lanterns are used by many cultures and come in many shapes. Round paper lanterns in China are made from tissue paper or bamboo and have a collapsing design. This project uses any size paper bag and has a stained glass effect.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Brown paper bag or any heavy duty bag
  • Tissue paper white, green, red (a variety of colors can also be used)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Sand
  • 2 x 2 pillar candle
  1. Step 1

Cut with scissors small cut outs in the front, sides and back of the paper bag. Folding the bag in little sections all over makes it easier to cut out shapes. You can also draw a picture on first and then cut it out, making sure to leave details well connected.

  2. Step 2

Glue pieces of tissue paper on the inside of the bag, covering the cuts outs. You can do a random pattern of color or put them into a picture design. Let glue dry.

  3. Step 3

    Fill bag 1/4 with sand.

  4. Step 4

Place pillar candle in bag. Candle should be four inches from sides of bag and nestled firmly in sand.

  5. Step 5

Place lanterns along pathway, out of the way of any foot traffic. Light candles when needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • This project can be a quick design or extremely detailed. Rocks can be used as a first layer before sand to weight the lantern down more.
  • Never leave lanterns unattended. Adult supervision is recommended when children are present. Have a water source and a fire extinguisher nearby for any fire accidents.
