Braces, an effective method to straighten teeth, are made of orthodontic metal brackets and wires. The brackets are cemented on each tooth and a wire is threaded through each bracket. The length of time wearing braces depends on how crooked your teeth are, but typically they're worn for 1 1/2 to two years. Braces can hurt the tissue on the inside of your mouth, especially if your braces are new. However, there is relief from the discomfort of braces, available at the drugstore.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wax for braces
  1. Step 1

Go to a drugstore or mass merchandiser, most of which sell dental items. You'll find wax for braces, and it's inexpensive. You can also get wax from your orthodontist.

  2. Step 2

Pinch off a small portion of wax and roll the wax into a small ball. Press the wax against the bracket or wire that's hurting your mouth and smooth the wax over the area with your finger. You should feel relief immediately because the wax covers the rough part of the braces.

  3. Step 3

Remove the wax when you eat or brush your teeth. Reapply the wax when it starts to wear thin and you feel the bracket poking through again. You should always take off the old piece of wax and put a new piece on to feel the most comfort.

Tips & Warnings
  • To remove the wax, peel it from your braces. You can also try using a toothbrush if some wax gets behind the wire. If the wax isn't sufficient in helping with discomfort, call or visit your orthodontist to see if she has anything else.
  • Do not swallow the wax.
