Instructions

    • 1

Locate a long wig. Pirate wigs can usually be found both online and in costume shops. If your hair is already long, you can do this step without the wig. Fit the wig to your head. You don't want the wig to look freshly brushed; the pirate look is all about messy hair. Fold the bandana into a triangle. Place a bandana over the top of your head, with the flat fold at the front. Pull the two corners back, pirate-style, and tie the bandana around back at the nape of your neck.

    • 2

Cut an old pair of black or tan pants and tatter the bottoms. You can find inexpensive pants at a local thrift shop if you don't own a pair that you're willing to cut. Women can also choose to wear a black skirt.

    • 3

Pair a pirate-style vest with a white, loose-sleeve tunic. A thrift shop can help in this area, too. Women might choose to wear a corset-style top either over the tunic or as a stand-alone top.

    • 4

Find a pair of high-top black boots. Tuck your pant legs in or wear them out. If you can't find authentic-looking boots, go barefoot.

    • 5

Wear a lot of gold, bangle jewelry, the gaudier the better. Men can clip hoop earrings onto their ears. Large gold clunky necklaces and wearing large gold rings on several different fingers help achieve the pirate effect.

    • 6

Gather whatever accessories you can find. A realistic-looking toy holster and gun, a sword, a spyglass, and a compass will all aid in creating the pirate look. If you can locate a stuffed parrot, wear it on your shoulder.

Tips & Warnings

  • If using a real weapon, such as a sword, always be careful when around children or other people.
