A three-string lanyard

You can make a three-string lanyard by binding three strings together braiding them. This is a simple project you can use to learn to work with string, cords and rope. Lanyards are commonly used to hold objects such as badges, whistles, keys, stop watches, compasses or small knives, and are typically worn around the neck. They are often made from colorful strands to make them more attractive and decorative.

Continue crossing the left string over the middle string and then crossing the right string over the middle string. The is exactly the same as braiding hair. When the braid is finished, secure the ends with tape or tie them tightly with a piece of thread.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose pieces of string at least 30-inches long to make a lanyard to loop around your neck. Thread the lanyard through the looped end of a lanyard hook. Tie the ends together in a square knot by crossing the right side of the lanyard over the left, then crossing the left side up and over the right side and through the loop. Pull the knot tightly to secure it. After you tie the square knot, remove the tape or thread that has secured the ends of the lanyard, then spread the ends outward to form tassels. Pull firmly on the braid as you cross each string over the center string to ensure that the lanyard is tightly braided. You can also make lanyards using flat plastic or leather strips, which are sometimes referred to as "gimp" or "boondoggle." These are available in many different colors. Lanyard hooks come in different styles, including swivel hooks and eyelets.
