How to Change the Battery on a Watch
Replacing a watch battery on your own can save you time and money by eliminating the need to visit a jewelry store or watch repair shop. Depending upon the design of your watch, this can be a simple procedure using common household tools--or it can be a job best left to the experts. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Determine whether your watch has a screw back or a snap back. If the back panel has a series of regularly spaced notches around the edge, you must either unscrew it with an adjustable wrench designed for this purpose or have the battery replaced by an expert. If the back panel is smooth and lies flat against the watch case, you can snap it off.
-
2
Look for a small slot or notch along the seam between the back panel and the watch case. Place the watch facedown on a towel to prevent scratching the glass face. Wedge a dull knife blade or a small screwdriver into the slot and gently pry off the panel.

Note the battery position. Most likely, only the positive (+) end will be visible. If the battery is held in place with a bracket, unscrew the bracket. If it's held in place with a retention spring, use a screwdriver or other small instrument to hold back the spring. Turn the watch over and tap on the case to dislodge the battery. Don't pry out the battery, as this can damage the delicate inner workings of the watch.
-
4
Identify the battery type. The manufacturer's name and a number or alphanumeric code should be printed on one end. Replacement batteries can be purchased at most drugstores and discount stores.
-
5
Slide the new battery into place. Replace or reposition any brackets or retention springs. Reposition the back panel and press down until it snaps into place.

Tips & Warnings
Clean the watch case with a small brush before removing the back panel to prevent debris from falling inside the watch. Purchase tool kits specifically designed for watch repair at jewelry supply stores.
Use caution when prying off the back panel to avoid cutting yourself or damaging your watch. If you can't remove the panel without a struggle, have an expert replace the battery. Opening your watch will probably void your warranty. Opening a waterproof watch will break the vacuum seal, which may allow moisture to enter. Use the edge of a knife instead of the delicate tip to pry off the back panel. If the tip breaks, the knife is ruined.
