Recycled holiday cards

Greeting cards tend to pile up during the holiday season unless you have a way of displaying and arranging them. Instead of heaping them in a basket or tossing them in a drawer, make a card holder to spread the joy of the season and remind you of everyone you love.

Things You'll Need

  • Large piece of cardboard
  • Marker
  • Utility knife
  • Green fabric
  • Scissors
  • Hot-glue gun
  • Cording or ribbon
  • Yellow construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Gold glitter

Instructions

    • 1

Draw an outline of a Christmas tree on a large piece of cardboard. Cut away the excess cardboard with a utility knife.

    • 2

Lay out the green fabric face down with the cardboard tree on top of the fabric. Cut the fabric, leaving enough to cover the tree with about 1 inch extra all the way around.

    • 3

Generously apply hot glue to one side of the cardboard, particularly around the edges. Press the unfinished side of the fabric onto the glue. Allow the glue to dry.

    • 4

Apply glue around the edges of the cardboard on the other side. Press the excess fabric into the glue. Let it dry.

    • 5

Glue ribbon or cording along the edges of the tree with hot glue.

    • 6

Cut out another piece of cardboard approximately 2 by 5 inches. Poke a hole in one end of the cardboard and glue the other end to the back of your cardboard tree slightly higher than the center. You can hang the tree on the wall through the hole.

    • 7

To make a topper, use some of the excess cardboard to cut out a star.

    • 8

Trace the star onto yellow construction paper. Cut out the construction paper star.

    • 9

Cover the construction paper star with glue using the glue stick. Generously sprinkle gold glitter over the star.

    • 10

Glue the construction paper star onto the cardboard cutout.

    • 11

Use hot glue to attach the star to the top of the tree.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use thumb tacks to attach the cards to the tree. Ribbon or seed beads also can be attached to the tree vertically to keep the cards in place.

  • Children should not use the utility knife or hot-glue gun.
