How to Make Candles With Paraffin Wax Using a Fiberglass Wick
Candles add elegance to a dinner table and romantic ambiance to a room. It can be easy to make your own candles using paraffin wax and fiberglass wicks. Paraffin is inexpensive and readily available for candle making. Fiberglass wicks can last longer than cotton wicks and are an option for homemade candles.

- Fiberglass candle wick
- Metal wick tab
- Candle mold
- Cooking oil spray
- Wooden dowel or stick
- Small metal bowl
- Paraffin wax

1
Cut a length of fiberglass wick that is 6 to 8 inches longer than the height of the mold. Affix a metal wick tab to the bottom of the wick by threading the wick through the hole on the tab and pulling about ½ inch of wick through it.
-
2
Prepare the mold. Spray the inside of the mold with cooking oil spray. Place the metal wick tab at the bottom of the mold. Pull the wick up to the top of the mold and let the excess hang over the side.

3
Lay a wooden dowel or a stick across the top of the mold. Tie the excess wick to the stick, making sure that the part of the wick that is inside the mold is taut.
-
4
Melt the paraffin wax. Place wax into a small metal bowl and place the bowl into a pan of simmering water. Stir occasionally until the wax is completely melted.
-
5
If desired, add a crayon to color the candle and a few drops of essential oil for scent. When adding color, about a quarter to half a crayon is enough to color a candle made with 1/2 lb. of paraffin.
-
6
Carefully pour the paraffin wax into the mold, being careful not to knock off the dowel with the wick tied to it.
-
7
Let the wax harden. This can take several hours, depending on the size of the candle.
-
8
Carefully remove the candle from the mold after it has hardened. Trim the wick so it is about 3/8 inch long as measured from the top of the candle.
