How to Troubleshoot the Air Conditioning in a Pontiac Grand Prix

by Editorial Team

Avoid a trip to the mechanic by trying to troubleshoot problems yourself in your Pontiac Grand Prix. Air conditioning problems are quite common, but can often be quite simple to diagnose and even fix.

Step 1

Start the car and turn the air conditioning on. Allow the engine to run a few minutes so the air can cool. Check to make sure you have the proper buttons selected. This simple step may uncover the root of the problem.

Step 2

See if the problem is as simple as a blown fuse. It is probably a blown fuse if the temperature controls on the dashboard seem to work correctly but have no effect on the air. Find the fuse box in a Pontiac Grand Prix inside the glove box. Locate a small bin on the right side of the glove box and open it. The fuse controlling AC will be in location 28.

Step 3

Check the control panel if the climate controls on the dashboard do not feel right. First disconnect the black negative cable and wait two minutes to disable the air bag. Remove the entire instrument trim panel, which extends the entire length of the dashboard. Find the control panel behind the radio. Remove the screws holding it into place. Unplug the electrical connector and pull the control panel out.

Step 4

Adjust the air levels with the controls as the car is running. Listen for the customary blowing noise. If you cannot hear it, or it does not increase when the air is turned to high, then the problem is likely the blower motor. First disconnect and remove the instrument panel. The blower motor is found on the passenger side behind another trim panel. Unscrew to remove it.
